Manufacturers rate printers for a certain page volume and expected service life, but real-world lifespan varies enormously between two identical printers depending on how they're treated. Dust buildup, cheap or poor-quality paper shedding fibers into the paper path, low-quality consumables leaving residue on internal components, and simple neglect account for a large share of "premature" printer failures — problems that are largely preventable with a small amount of routine care.
Weekly (or before each large print job)
- Check paper quality and loading. Use paper within the manufacturer's recommended weight/type range, fan the stack before loading to prevent sheets sticking together, and don't overfill the tray past its fill line.
